Try something new!
“Try something new; it’ll be fun!” I think that’s how the saying goes. The truth is, it probably won’t be fun at first. I tried Fat Biking for the first time this past weekend, and well, it was fun”ish”. Fat biking is a bike with very wide tyres, usually at least 3.8 inches in width and is most often a type of riding done in the winter on snow. I had decided at the end of biking season that I wanted to try fat biking, and so, when an opportunity presented itself, I said yes; how hard could it be! Although, we rode a trail that I had ridden many times before, snow covered trails are very different! There was lots of walking with my bike, instead of riding my bike!! Hiking a trail with a bike is a different kind of workout! When we got to sections that I could ride, I felt like it was my first time riding…I was nervous, awkward, hesitant, and doing all the things you’re not supposed to do when mountain biking!!
When we try something new, our brain doesn’t have the how-to-do-it list for the new activity, and so we’re most likely going to be awkward, uncomfortable, hesitant, and probably not very good at it! There’s a quote that says, don’t be afraid of being a beginner. Fear can be a very big non-starter; it’s not easy trying something new, especially if you have an inner voice that tells you, you won’t be good at it so don’t bother. Change is scary, learning new things is scary, it’s called a comfort zone for a reason! But, when we give ourselves permission to expand our comfort zone, we get to experience growth and maybe even some fun and laughter!
Will I try fat biking, again??? Yes! So, gather up a group of friends, and try something new; it’ll be fun”ish”!!!
